We Ran a Programme for Teens. What They Wrote Changed Me.

Jun 16, 2025

When I think of Youth Day, I think of courage.

But I also think of what happens when that courage is met with support.

Years ago, while I was working at Wits Language School, we ran a powerful English programme for high school learners in Soweto and Alexandra townships in South Africa, funded by USAID. Many came in shy, unsure, quiet.

But what they wrote at the end of the programme left no doubt: something had changed.

One said:
“This has been a key to open my future.”

Another shared:
“I used to feel nervous that I couldn’t express myself. Now I stand on my own feet and tell myself that I’m going to make it.”

And this one still moves me:
“I didn’t believe in myself… but I realised nothing is impossible. I am now brave and not ashamed to shine.”

These weren’t just language improvements.
They were confidence breakthroughs. Identity shifts. Future-shaping moments.

We often talk about preparing young people for work — but we forget that communication is the bridge. Without it, ideas stay hidden. Confidence stays buried. Potential gets missed.

On this Youth Day, let’s remember: courage lives in our youth. But real transformation happens when that courage is met with support, instruction and belief.

Let’s recommit to showing up for the next generation — in ways that last.
